I recently treated a 48-year-old patient with lower face dermal fillers at Dr Bailey Medspa, based in Woodhouse, Leeds.
She has had lower face fillers before, and like many of our patients, she prefers a preventative, maintenance-based approach to ageing.
We speak a lot on this blog about early intervention, so this case study is a great example of what preventative dermal filler work looks like in real life.

Why choose preventative fillers?
Many online case studies show dramatic before-and-after transformations. They’re impressive, of course, but those results usually come from patients who have waited until there is significant volume loss, meaning more product, more cost, and more dramatic correction.
Preventative treatment, on the other hand, is about subtle, steady enhancement and maintaining structure over time. It helps to preserve your natural look and addresses volume loss and fine lines before they become too pronounced.
Investing in preventative fillers creates a long-term foundation for ongoing medical aesthetics treatments and reduces the need for more frequent and intensive correction.
What is a good age to start fillers?
Your genetics and lifestyle play a part in how you age. Some patients start noticing looser skin and wrinkles in their late 20s, while others may not see many changes until their 40s.
When you begin to notice the signs of ageing, it is worth talking to an aesthetics practitioner like Dr Bailey about available treatments and what they recommend.
Case study
My case study patient (female, 48 years) had begun to notice early sagging through the lower face, slight jowling, a chin dent that had become more visible with age, and heaviness in the lower cheeks that made her nasolabial folds appear deeper.

She hadn’t had any lower face fillers for four years, so it had been a while between appointments.
After assessing her face and discussing her goals, we created a treatment plan using 4ml of Juvéderm Voluma to restore support, contour, and lift.
Areas treated included:
- Jawline: to provide structure and definition
- Chin: to smooth the dent and improve facial profile
- Upper nasolabial region: to soften the appearance of the lines
- Lower cheeks: to add gentle volume and lift
A cannula was used to maximise comfort and reduce downtime. The full appointment took around 45 minutes, and we reviewed her results two weeks later.
What to expect after dermal filler treatment
When she came back for her review, the patient explained that she had experienced some swelling and tenderness afterwards, although there was no visible bruising.
She also noticed small bumps along the jawline during the first few days, which settled naturally within a week. Importantly, none of the swelling was noticeable to others.
Bumps, swelling and mild bruising are completely normal after treatment. A bit of redness is expected at any injection site, so some tenderness after fillers is nothing to worry about. However, if the discomfort feels unusual or you’re concerned at any point, contact your aesthetics provider for guidance.
By the two-week review, my patient’s filler had fully integrated. She described her lower face as feeling fuller, firmer, and better hydrated.

The improvement was subtle and natural, which is exactly what she wanted. No one could tell she’d had an injectable treatment, but she did receive compliments on looking refreshed and well-rested.
Natural looking fillers
Preventative dermal filler treatments like this are ideal for patients who want to maintain facial structure without dramatic changes. By supporting the deeper tissues before significant sagging occurs, we can preserve natural contours and slow the visible signs of ageing.
This approach means using less product per appointment, keeping results subtle and ensuring the face continues to look balanced over time.
It also highlights the importance of choosing an experienced medical practitioner who understands full-face rejuvenation and long-term facial harmony.
As a dentist, I am fully trained in facial anatomy and I use this knowledge and experience to make sure my patients get the natural results they desire.
Every face ages differently and requires a bespoke plan, from injectables to skin treatments and medical-grade skincare. Combining these elements provides the best opportunity to maintain firmness, hydration, and radiance throughout the years.
